A gathering place for moms in Upstate South Carolina
Sunday was such a beautiful day! My husband, daughter and I went over to my best friend's house so our daughter, McKennon, could play outside with her little boy. They recently got a trampoline, and McKennon absolutely loves it! They also have a great backyard, that's perfect for sitting on the deck and watching the little ones run around. Well, my daughter had tired of jumping on the trampoline, so she was running around the yard when she discovered the steps leading up to the deck. She loves climbing on stairs, so of course, she made a beeline for them. So I patiently held her hand while she walked up and down the steps. Thankfully, it was just about four steps down to the yard. We had just finished sharing a popsicle (there's something so sweet about sharing a popsicle with your daughter) when, with my help, she climbed down the steps and began playing in the yard again. I had walked back up on the deck to throw away my popsicle wrapper, and turned around, and McKennon is at the top of the steps. I start moving toward her to help her up the last step, when she turns around, and falls all the way down to the ground, hitting every step on the way down. My heart falls to my stomach as I imagine bloody knees, broken bones, the absolute worst. Thankfully, she was ok, just scaped up a bit. And she scared 10 years off mine and my husband's life. She's fallen down before, of course, but nothing like this. I kept replaying it in my head over and over all afternoon. I know accidents happen, but it was absolutely awful seeing her fall, and not getting to her in time! I felt like I had let her down. She sat in my lap crying and looking up at me with those big crocodile tears in her beautiful eyes for about 15 minutes. We were about to leave, when she stopped crying, hopped out of my lap and headed straight for those steps again. It looks like mommy and daddy are going to have to toughen up, because she seemed to handle her first big tumble better then we did!
