Spartanburg Moms

A gathering place for moms in Upstate South Carolina

So in doing some major Spring cleaning the past month, I realized that every year when I do so I look at my wedding gown and think this takes up so much space in this closet. But there it stays in the guest room closet with a couple of heavy winter coats that get used a few times a year and my husband's high school and college letter jackets that he can't part with! Those and luggage about take up the whole guest room closet!

But got me wondering what everyone else did with their wedding gown? I don't have daughters and even if I did, I would not expect them to want it. I heard about people making their wedding dresses into baby blankets, which is a great idea but I did not do that. I have thought about selling it, but kind of feel guilty about it. And it is almost 9 years old and while nice, it was not terribly expensive so probably wouldn't get more than $100 for it anyway.

So for now, it stays. I'm currently in a major weight loss challenge on myself! My hope is that next October on my 10 year anniversary I can fit into that dress. Two kids and ten years later.....we'll see if that is possible!!

My mom still has her wedding gown. She bought it in 1964 at a store in downtown Greer. She talked to someone at the Greer Heritage Museum and is probably going to donate it there since they did have some dresses on display there that were bought at that same store in the 50's and 60's. :-)

So, what has become of all of your wedding gowns?

I had mine preserved - cleaned and then sealed in an air-tight box. The outer box is solid, the inner box has a see-through window so I can see the dress through it. I store it under our bed. I just can't part with it! Ever... I remember looking in the cedar chest at my moms prom dress as a little girl and thinking it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen... Just great memories!
I donated mine to a place that loans them out for girls that can't afford dresses for proms and weddings...
My mother bought a mannequin when Proffits closed and my wedding dress is on the mannequin at the top of her "Scarlett O'Hara" stairs"
I really need to get mine preserved like kim's, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Mine is still in my old closet at my mom's house. I would never part with mine either. It's just too special to me. I remember looking at my mom's when I was a little girl, and even trying it on one time. I want my daughter to  be able to see it, and I would love to see her wear it one day.

Well...mine is in a rubermaid tub in the attic.  Probably yellowing nicely after 4 years!  I walked though a parking lot without holding the bustle and it got covered in brake dust, grease, and oils.  Oh well...at least I have the memories.  I wanted to have it preserved, but it was too expensive for my blood.  I wanted to spend mor eon the honeymoon fun and forget about the dress.  I will NEVER fit into again.  Unless I get the tummy tuck I need.  I am not huge, but I have a lot of saggy skin from where I gained so much and lost it all with my first baby.

So for now, mine still sits in the attic.  I do want to take it down and have it dry cleaned, but not preserved.

Mine is hanging in the closet in the bag from from the dress shop nearly 13 years later.  I have wanted to sell it, but my spouse was the one that didn't want to.  We don't have a daughter or any nieces either, so I don't really have that attachment to it to want to pass it down to anyone.
