A gathering place for moms in Upstate South Carolina
We had a big scare Monday night...
Everything was normal throughout the day. Seeger (17 months old) ate and played fine. He took a good long two and half hour nap and woke up happy as always. Then about an hour later he started thrashing around and screaming, followed by a deep sleep. About every 5 minutes he would thrash around and scream then go back to sleep. I knew he shouldn't have been sleepy because of the long nap he took.
I called my neighbor ( a nurse) and had her come look at him. She said to take him to the Peds office. This was about 5pm. They have evening hours now, and I told them I would be there around 6. The office open with the evening hours on that day was in Downtown Greenville. My neighbor stayed at my house with Cooper until dinner finished cooking in the oven. I told her just to take it to her house and eat because I didn't think we'd be back in time to enjoy it and I knew she didn't have anything planned for having to sit with Cooper.
I got the the Peds and my husband met me there. I wasn't sure if it was ok for Seeger to sleep so I had to drive down the interstate with my hazards on, looking in the mirror to make sure I kept Seeger awake when he started drifting off. When we got there Curt knew right away something wasn't right because Seeger wasn't happy to see him like he usually is. The Doctor looked at him and ruled out a concussion, as well as few other things. He said to let him sleep if that's what he wanted to do. He did a full exam and found nothing obvious wrong with him. He was about to have some blood drawn to make sure it was all fine and send us home with a stomach bug for a diagnosis. Then he was able to witness an episode of thrashing followed by sleep. I could see the fear come across the Doctor's face. He said he was going to call the Pediatric ER and tell them we were on the way and to see him immediately! He said he thought he had intussusception.
We got to the ER and went right back to a room. They were waiting on us and handled everything in a swift manner. They did an ultrasound on his intestines. She told us they were calling the Pediatric Radiologist to come in, but in the meantime the Radiologist there would be on the phone with the Pediatric one letting him know what was going on. We were taken back for X-rays and informed of the severity of intussescpetion. They told us I caught it early (most people don't bring their kids in for 24-48 hours after it starts) and it should be corrected without surgery. The Pediatric Radiologist got there and did an air enema. We watched on the live X-ray and saw the air expand the intestines and when it got to the part that folded...it just pushed it all out and back to normal!
They kept him overnight on a bag of fluids and we were able to go home the next day. He is doing fine at home, back to his normal happy self! There was a Pediatric Surgeon in the room during the procedure. He was there in case something went wrong. The surgeon came by to discharge us and said after looking back at the X-rays, he noticed the lymph nodes in his intestines are swoolen more then they should be even with the diagnosis. He wants us to bring him back June 14th for more X-rays to make sure the swelling went away.
I'm not sure what happens if it's still swollen, I didn't ask because I don't want to worry about something that I can't control. He is in God's hands, so I'm not going to worry. I would appreciate and and all prayers that this next appointment will show no signs of swelling. THANKS!
