Spartanburg Moms

A gathering place for moms in Upstate South Carolina

In the news this past week, Obama announced that he is violating our first admendment right of freedom of religion.  He told the largest Christian group in America, Catholics, who also made up 53% of people who voted for him, that they will have to violate their conscience by FORCING them to add birth control, after moring pill, and sterilization to their healthcare coverage or else.  This is not a joke.  No matter what your stance on the matter is, the government cannot get away with this.  All I am asking is that you take a few minutes of your time and contact your representative.  You can go to www.usccb.org/conscience to learn more about this assault and it will give you a link to contact Graham, Gowdy, and DeMint.  Please help stop this.  If this goes through, it will be the beginning of a slippery slope that will effect everybody.

Although this may be "FORCING" them to add birth control to their health care coverage, they are not FORCING women to take it.

I am glad that birth control was available for me when I was in Grad School and my husband and I were newlyweds who wanted to finish our education before expanding our family.

I am also glad to be using birth control now that I have my first child and am not financially ready for a second one. Thank God I work for a company that gives health care coverage which allows me to make my own decision about when I want to have a baby.

And that's your decision. But my point is, that the government cannot force people to go against what they believe.  How can you tell a relgious group who believe that it is morally wrong that they have to add it to their health care coverage?  Just fyi, if you ever want to get off of birth control, natural family planning works.

I do feel that the government does go too far at times telling people what they can and can't do.

Catholic-affiliated businesses are not churches, which are exempt from this edict. If they prefer to not offer contraceptives, they can be like real churches and not accept federal funds. They want it both ways.

There are lots of religious organizations who don't agree with all of the things they are required to cover in their insurance policies. For example Jehova's Witnesses don't believe in blood transfusions.Muslims don't believe in circumcision.

Maybe religious organizations should just trust that the people they hire are good people with the same morals they have?

Side note: Birth control pills are used by some for other reasons such as regulating their periods, acne, and even for chemical imbalances.

Catholic instutions are runned by the Catholic Church, therefore, those instutions have to follow the laws of the Church.  And just for the record, this isn't just talking about birth control, this is also talking about sterilization, and abortion drugs.  Which also violates Church teachings.  Again, the government cannot force people to violate their religious beliefs.  Just like they can't make a Jehova Witness to take blood transfusions or a Muslim to get circumcised.  So are you saying that Catholics organizations should only hire other Catholics? Therefore they should only treat other Catholics? That's the only way these Catholic instutuions would be exempt. If we only hired Catholics and if we only served Catholics.  We haven't done that in over 2000 years, and it's not going to start todayl

Exactly. The Government should not force people to violate their religious beliefs. They aren't forcing birth control on anyone. Nor are they forcing circumcision or transfusions. Just the rights of a working individual to be covered for them if they personally deem them necessary.

Obama already made it possible for birth control to be provided so it remains up to women/men what they want to do with their own bodies.

As for the rest of your comment. No, that is not at all what I am saying.

No this violate relgious liberty. If people want birth control, sterlilization, and abortion, they need to pay for it. Not the Church. And Obama's so-called accomondation, doesn't change anything. Many of these places are self-insured, or insured by Catholic insurance.  So he is still telling Catholics that they have to violate their morals.
